As one of our Faith Promise Hatfield Initiatives, our Prison Ministry aims to bring hope behind the gates. Using the Alpha Course, we’re creating a space for honest conversations, healing, and discovery – proving that no wall is too high for grace to climb.
We go because of Jesus, and the Alpha Course provides a unique bridge, allowing inmates to explore life’s biggest questions in a safe, non-judgmental environment. Our mission is simple: to see lives restored and spirits renewed from the inside out.
Below, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions about our Prison Ministry.
Yes. Security is the top priority for both the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) and our team. You will always be in a group; sessions are held in designated areas, and correctional officers are always nearby. We operate under strict protocols to ensure everyone’s safety.
We provide a briefing on prison etiquette and safety protocols before your first visit. As for the ministry side, the Alpha Course is designed to be simple to facilitate – you don’t need to be a theologian, just a willing listener! We do a refresher training before each Alpha block.
Think “modest and practical”. Comfortable, respectful clothing, such as jeans or trousers, and a plain t-shirt or golf shirt work best. Avoid: Camouflage patterns, high heels, expensive jewellery, or clothing that is too tight and revealing.
Very little. You will typically only be allowed to bring your ID and the Alpha materials. Cell phones, recording devices, cigarettes, and cash are strictly prohibited and must be left in your car or a locker.
Absolutely. Some of the most impactful volunteers are those who simply show up to sit at a table, drink tea (where permitted), and listen. Your presence and a friendly smile are often the most powerful tools for showing the love of Jesus.
Currently, the Prison Ministry Team meets and serves every Thursday morning, departing from church at 08:00 and returning by noon.
A typical Alpha session lasts about three hours. We request a commitment for the duration of the course (typically 15-17 weeks) to build trust and consistency with inmates.
To provide a space where men can explore the basics of the Christian faith, ask “why am I here?”, and tangibly experience the grace of God.
