Pathways: Helping Young People Discern God’s Direction for Their Lives

“What should I study?”
“Which career path should I pursue?”
“How do I know what God has called me to do?”

For many young people, these questions can feel overwhelming. And in South Africa’s current climate – where uncertainty around education, work, and the future is often a daily reality – guidance and support have never been more important.

At Hatfield, we believe that every person carries God-given gifts, potential, and purpose. That’s the heart behind Pathways – a Faith Promise Hatfield Initiative designed to help youth and young adults discover direction, develop confidence, and make wise decisions about their future.

Why Pathways Exists

Across our nation, many young people are forced to navigate some of life’s biggest decisions without meaningful guidance or support. Questions around subject choices, university applications, career direction, and personal growth can feel daunting – especially in communities already carrying the weight of poverty, inequality, and unemployment.

Pathways, spearheaded by one of our congregants, Dana Mahan, was born out of a desire to respond practically and compassionately to this need.

The Pathways team include experienced Christian professionals with a shared passion: to invest in the next generation by offering free aptitude assessments, educational planning, career guidance, and life coaching consultations.

Their vision is simple yet deeply meaningful – to help young people become healthy, grounded, hope-filled Kingdom citizens who are equipped to live, work, and serve with purpose.

A Team with Real Experience and Real Heart

One of Pathways’ unique strengths is the diversity and depth of its volunteer consulting team.

The team includes professionals and leaders from fields such as theology, education, psychology, economics, human resources, development, business leadership, and public administration – all united by a shared commitment to helping young people flourish.

Together, they bring decades of professional and ministry experience, along with a genuine desire to see young people discover God’s purpose for their lives.

More Than Career Guidance

At its core, Pathways is not simply about choosing a career. It’s about helping people ask deeper questions:

  • What has God placed inside me?
  • How can my gifts serve others?
  • What kind of life am I being called to build?
  • How do I pursue success while remaining grounded in Kingdom values?

Pathways seeks to help young people align their ambitions with identity, purpose, and discipleship – understanding that vocation is not only about earning a living, but about living faithfully.
