Hosea was a prophet who warned the Northern Kingdom of Israel that they needed to repent and turn from their wicked ways. They would then be spared from the severe consequences resulting from their rebellion. This book is unique in that God instructed Hosea to marry a prostitute by the name of Gomer. God used Hosea's day-to-day living and the heartache that he endured with this adulterous woman, as a prophetic symbol of God's relationship with Israel.
Hosea may be a small book in the Bible, but it carries a huge message that shows us three incredible attributes of God's love.
1. God's love is tough love.
God has given us free will. When we choose to walk away from God, He allows us to go, and He enables us to bear the consequences of our choices.
'They sow the wind and reap the whirlwind.' Hosea 8:7a (NKJV)
2. God's love is unconditional love.
People in our lives may give up on us, but God never does. Regardless of the poor choices, we have made, He continues to love each of us.
'Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another and is an adulteress. Love her as the Lord loves the Israelites.' Hosea 3:1 (NIV)
3. God loves us more than we could ever comprehend.
This is clearly seen in the death of Jesus on the cross for each and every one on us.
'Come, let us return to the Lord. He has torn us to pieces, but He will heal us; He has injured us, but He will bind up our wounds.' Hosea 6:1 (NIV)
The turbulence of Hosea's marriage is the perfect metaphor for God's love for us. Though we may run from God, He doesn't stop loving us. He always finds us and takes us back. Walking away from God leads us into a valley. It's a valley filled with brokenness - dreams, finances, emotions, lives. But, when we return to Him, He creates a door of hope and even the most rebellious and hopelessly lost are restored.
