Praying and fasting

The idea of fasting is not a suggestion, but an instruction from Jesus and is still applicable to our lives today. However, as with all ideas received from our Heavenly Father, this should be a 'God idea' and not merely a 'good idea'. We thank God for the Holy Spirit, and when we take time to enter into God's presence and wait to hear His voice, then we will fast for the right reasons.

The Holy Spirit may prompt us to consider fasting when there is a need in our lives. For example: If you need to pray about a matter persistently, that's an invitation from the Lord to fast; if you need God's guidance, that's an encouragement to fast; if you need deliverance or protection, that's a time to fast.

Matthew 17:20-21(NASB)

'And He said to them, "Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you." But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.'

Fasting helps us to build our faith, adds a unique dimension to our spiritual life, and helps us grow in our Christlikeness in ways that are unavailable through any other means.
