My daughter wants to become a professional tennis player.
She has passionately pursued this goal since the age of eleven. I have enjoyed watching her live out her dream. Sometimes she has pushed herself past her limit. Since 2014 she has been playing in the ITF (International Tennis Federation) as well, so her dream has become reality or so one might think . . .
Recently injuries have forced her to withdraw from many of the tournaments. I realise that Danica is under a lot of pressure to perform well and this has taken its toll on her body.
This morning I was with her at the physio (she has an elbow injury); I was pondering how we were going to keep her injury-free so that she could compete.
I felt the Lord drop some questions in my Spirit;
• Who are we living for?
• Who are we working for?
• Who is Danica playing tennis for?
Danica, I believe, is playing for man’s approval. She will always experience pressure if she is playing for that reason. It made me realise if we play, work, and live for Jesus by laying down our lives (what we do) for Him, then we will always feel loved and approved no matter what.
Matthew 16:25-26 (NIV)
For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
Are we willing to lay down our lives to gain Jesus?
Herein lies complete freedom when we live and move for Him.
Oh Lord, the pressures of this world weigh us down because sometimes we feel the need to perform to gain the world’s approval. I want to lay down my life (what I do) for you, Lord. I want me and my household to gain the freedom that comes from living for you.
I ask this in the precious name of Jesus, to the Glory of God, my Father,
