This week we take a look at Psalm 19:7(NIV) – one of the many psalms that David wrote:
The law of the Lord is perfect,
refreshing the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,
making wise the simple.
David makes an interesting statement when he says, “the law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul”. What a wonderful world it would be if we all knew what David understood so well. David doesn’t say he himself is perfect – none of us would dare to say so – and we know that perfection is impossible in our own strength. If only we could live by the Lord’s perfect Law; how happy we would be; how different our TV newscasts would be.
When I read this for the first time, the idea of living by the Lord’s perfect law, seemed impossible. However, because of the death and resurrection of Jesus, this is easily attainable. We can begin where David begins – by delighting in the beautiful perfection of the Lord’s Law.
Jesus became the Law in human flesh. We should think about His perfection and the beauty of His words and works. Then we will begin loving what He loved, seeking to do the things He did, and becoming more and more like Him. You become what you admire.
With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we too will see that “the statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple”. We are guaranteed to have our souls refreshed. What an amazing promise!
