Life and the circumstances that make up our day-to-day living, sometimes bring obstacles and situations that may appear to be insurmountable, beyond any possible solution. It is at times like these that we need to take courage from the Word of God. One of the many incredible stories found in the Old Testament, is in Daniel chapter 3.
King Nebuchadnezzar had built an enormous golden statue and when music was played everyone was instructed to fall down and worship the statue. Three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, refused to bow down to this idol. The punishment for this transgression was that you would be thrown into a fiery furnace.
Faced with the furnace and the prospect of imminent death, King Nebuchadnezzar gives them a final opportunity to change their stance. Their response was the following, ‘Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand.”’ (Daniel 3:16-17, NIV)
We all know how this story ends. A fourth person joins them in the fiery furnace and they are not harmed at all. It's a living testimony to the miraculous hand of God’s protection. We are reminded of this in Isaiah 43:2 (NIV).
'When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.'
There are times in life when, regardless of how huge and intimidating a problem or obstacle may be, like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, we need to stand firm in our faith in our amazing God.
